If you are a contractor in the construction industry and you employ subcontractors, then you have a legal obligation to deduct tax and National Insurance from subcontractors’ wages each week or month.
When a subcontractor applies to be a CIS self-employed worker HMRC will issue them with a UTR (Unique Tax Reference Number). This UTR allows the contractor to deduct the correct amount of CIS tax from your or your subcontractors’ payments each month. You can apply for CIS status here or alternatively, contact your local office.
